Angry Birds

Although you might not have heard of the name Rovio but if you enjoy playing mobile games, you probably would have heard of the insanely popular Angry Birds. Angry Birds first debuted on Android phones as a simple and fun game, with the player controlling a bunch of angry birds trying to defend against eggs-stealing pigs by shooting at them. Although fairly simple in nature, the app game has gone on to become a huge hit in the mass market.

How big of a hit you ask? Well firstly it got big enough to warrant Nintendo making a less-than-positive comment on mobile-based games in general, claiming them to be “garage games” that “they are not looking to do business with”. Apparently Rovio thinks otherwise, as there are strong sentiments from the company that they don’t have the “inferiority complex” of a small gaming film that some were expecting them to have. Ironically, Angry Birds is reported to be going on Nintendo 3DS soon. Did the garage game get so big that Nintendo decided to exclude them from the garage developer game list?

Angry Birds’ popularity has also soared to the point of super stardom, literally, with Hollywood involvement reported to be in the works. In addition, the game has seen consideration success with in its plush toy licensing, earning over 2m in revenue even though the game has only been out for over a year. That’s hardly surprising actually, given today’s enormous market in mobile app games. Angry Birds alone is currently holding a proud record of over 100m downloads. If the game’s popularity continues to soar like it did in the past quarter (50m downloads), you can expect to see Angry Birds coming near you in all shapes and sizes.

Do you expect to see Angry Bird to become even bigger, possibly elevated to the status of Pokemon? Given the current odds, we certainly wouldn’t want to bet against it. Let us know.
